The Hospital Care Package is my baby of all the products. I have done an awful lot of research in what should be its core package and what the extra add-ons should be. Being a nurse on an inpatient ward, I have seen many patients come in via the emergency department with very little belongings as they just did not expect to stay. As a ward, although 75% of the time we can offer them PJs, a cheap toothbrush and toothpaste, a sachet of shower gel and an all in one hair & conditioner pouch it is not always possible to give this and even when it is, the products are cheap and barely do the job.
Hospitals also smell clinical, even the toiletries. Patients don’t want to smell clinical or have a constant reminder that they are in hospital. They get that enough with the constant beeping of machines, interruptions from medical staff and countless investigations. A lot of my own patients tend to suffer from nausea and fatigue. I have spent time talking with them about smells of products that would make them feel worse, to allow me to better understand what fragrances are OK to use. Most wards do not allow flowers or for the patient to have a lot of stuff with them, therefore the traditional gift of flowers and unnecessary nick-nacks are off the cards.
Whatever the reason that your loved one is in hospital, I’m sure together we can create the perfect gift.
